5 January 1999

Daily survival for Metro Manila family
costs almost P450

A wage hike remains a pipe dream as cost of living continues to increase.

IBON computations show that in Metro Manila, a family of six needs at least P445.83 to survive in one day. In areas outside Metro Manila, the living cost is pegged at P349.16 (agriculture) and P328.82 (non-agriculture).

The figures imply that the P198-daily minimum wage in Metro Manila fulfills only 44% of living cost requirement. Minimum wage earners outside Metro Manila also suffer the same plight as their daily pay ranges from P131 to P188.

Compared to the same period in 1994, the daily cost of living figures as of November 1998 represent a 39% and 36% increase for Manila and outside Metro Manila, respectively.
